A New Adventure in the Quest to Get and Stay Healthy

Middle Eastern Dance

More commonly referred to in the non Arab-Western world as

Belly Dancing!!!

Trina and I signed up for an 8 - week class at our local community school. This is a class that teaches the basic moves of the dance.

No pictures to share right now:-) but I can tell you that I love this class!

I'm learning to move muscles I never even knew I had!

A big part of this dance is learning to isolate different muscles in the back, chest, stomach and butt. It also focuses a great deal on posture.

We just finished our third class last night and as I sit here this morning I can really feel it in my stomach muscles!

Check out this link to see our teacher and to learn more about this type of dance...

Last year at this time if someone had told me I'd be tying on a shimmy shake skirt and doing Zumba and belly dancing I'd have said they were crazy!

Out of the box and out of my comfort zone!

I love it!

Filling the Freezer - Green Drink Ready to Blend

I try and drink a green drink or smoothie made with kale and fruit everyday. Great way to get a couple servings of veggies and a fruit or two in my diet. I find that I often can't use up the kale before it goes bad or I have fresh kale but I'm out of bananas or pineapple. I decided to package up my green drink ingredients and freeze them. That way I'll always have what I need to get my greens in for the day.

Note: The greens seemed to give off a gassy or strong smell when I opened the bag after it had been in the freezer a week or so. It tasted fine but I just want you to be aware of the possibility.

My recipe is pretty simple...

To make two 6-8 ounce drinks I fill each quart size freezer bag with the following:

3-4 cups kale, washed and chopped
1/2 banana
1/2 apple (peeled if it isn't organic)
1/2 cup pineapple chunks (canned in juice or fresh)
1/2 cup pineapple juice or a combination of water and juice
(If you don't want to use juice just eliminate it from the bag. Add water to the blender when you're ready to make the drink.)

-you can substitute any fruit you like-

Prep
Wash, peel and core the apple (unless it's organic then I don't peel)
Cut the apple and banana in to chunks.
Drain the pineapple juice in to a measuring cup.
Layer the apple, banana and pineapple chunks in the bottom of a freezer bag.
Pour the juice over the fruit. (This will keep the fruit from turning brown.)
Stuff the kale in the bag and close it up.

Each bag contains 1/2 apple, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup pineapple
chunks, 1/2 cup juice and about 3 cups kale.  This make
two servings of 6-8 ounces each. I drink one with breakfast and
one for an afternoon snack.

TIP
To remove the air insert a clean straw into the bag. Close the bag around the straw. Suck the air out of the bag. Quickly remove the straw and close the bag. Not quite the same as a Food Saver but does a pretty good job.

Place the bags in the freezer and use within one month.

To use put 1 cup of water in a blender and add the frozen ingredients. Blend to desired consistency.
You may need to add more water or juice to your liking.
If your blender can't handle the frozen fruit  and liquid you may need to defrost the bag first.

Defrost over night in the fridge or allow the bag to sit in a bowl of water for about and hour until defrosted enough to blend.

It feels good knowing that I won't be throwing out any more kale.

Enjoy!

Weekend Walking - By Patti

Trying to find ways to add interest to her daily walk Trina found a couple of walking clubs in town and she shared them with me.

Shannon Miller Walk Fit

First Coast Trail Forgers Walking Club part of the American Volkssport Association

Last weekend we attended the Shannon Miller Walk Fit meet up. This was a 3 mile walk at Community First Saturdays held downtown.

It was a small group only 8 of us including me and Trina, her daughter and my husband. We walked from the Landing over the Acosta bridge, by the Friendship fountain and then returned to the Landing via the Main Street bridge.

I'd never walked over the bridges before but it's something I've wanted to do. Going up the Acosta was quite a haul since it has a pretty steep incline. But it was OK and we all made it!  Coming down was much easier...

The Main Street bridge was much easier since it isn't as tall and it was mostly in the shade.

The walk was fun except it was very hot. The best part was shopping along the river front:-) We found a booth that was selling local, raw honey so we had to check it out and buy a couple of bottles.
Trina, Me and Trina's daughter after the walk.
See the bridge behind us? Yep we walked over it...

After the walk we went over to the Omni Hotel and checked out the Volksmarch box. (box contains the maps and directions for different walks that you can do on your own.)

From the American Volkssport Association website:
What is Volksmarching? A volksmarch is a non-profit, non-competitive 5 kilometer 3.1 mile) or 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) walk. It's not a pledge walk. It's not a race. It is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself. Volksmarching received its name from its origins in Europe. Today there are thousands of Volkssport clubs around the world, allied in the International Federation of Popular Sports.

Sunday morning John and I did the San Marco walk. It was a 5K walk (about 3 miles) through San Marco shopping district and residential area. Interesting walk with lots of big houses and perfect lawns. Nice and shady which was a plus since it's still hot here...
This Volkmarch took us through a small city park.

One thing I love about walking is that you slow down and really take in the
sights. You also have time to ponder why in the world someone would
have a blue toilet...

A nice weekend of walking, seeing some new places and meeting a few new people.

Take a walk and enjoy the day the Lord has made!

What I Ate Yesterday - September 11, 2013 by Patti

Our first habit was to keep a food journal and I have this firmly established. I write down every BLT (bite, lick and taste:-)

One thing I've been doing for the past couple of weeks is when I write food in my journal I indicate whether it was a good choice, poor choice or a choice that is OK in moderation or OK but could be better. Of course my goal is to always make good choices but I hope at least the good will out number the poor. I also go back and look at the poor choices and the OK choices and try and see if I can improve them.

:-) = good choice
- = OK in moderation or OK but could be better
:-( = poor choice

This is what I ate yesterday...

Breakfast:
1 egg with onion and broccoli scrambled in 1 tsp olive oil :-)
1 piece Ezekiel sprouted bread toasted :-)
1 tsp butter - (in moderation)
Green drink made with 2 cups kale, 1/2 cup pineapple and water :-)
Cranberry water - water, unsweetened cranberry juice, lemon juice and apple cider vinegar :-)

Lunch:
Salad made with 4 cups romaine and 1 cup cucumbers :-)
1/2 cup kidney beans :-)
honey mustard dressing :-(  (I need to find a better salad dressing-I'm going to try to make my own)

Afternoon snack:
banana and kiwi :-)

Dinner: Logan's Steakhouse
Salad :-) (they make the best salad!)
honey mustard dressing :-(
6 ounce steak - (This wasn't really a bad choice but I should have only eaten 3-4 ounces. I should have taken half of it home and had it for lunch the next day)
asparagus :-)
1 small piece of bread with butter - (This wasn't too bad-I only ate one small piece)
Peanut butter sundae :-(  (Ice cream seems to be my downfall:-( This wouldn't have been so bad except Sunday I had an hot fudge sundae - I need to really be careful and limit treats like this.)

9 good choices
3 OK choices in moderation
3 poor choices (includes the salad dressing which I'm working on today)

Exercise:

Cleaned house and vacuumed (yes, I consider that exercise:-)
Walked at the mall for about 40 minutes

Eat well and have a great day!

Zumba or How to Move Your Booty!

Zumba!

The hardest work out I've ever done and the most fun I've ever had working out!

1 hour and 20 minutes of non stop movement.

That pretty much sums up Zumba.

Find a Zumba Class

I found this class by searching Zumba.com. You can search by city or zip code.
I emailed the teacher for more info. I made it clear that I was looking for a class that would be suitable for someone who was new and inexperienced. I could tell from her reply that I'd found the right class for me.

What You'll Need

  • Wear a good pair of shoes that will give your foot support and cushion. You'll need a smoother sole so it doesn't grab when you move.  You will be sliding and jumping around!
  •  You don't need expensive workout clothes just get something comfortable and easy to move in. You will be moving and sweating!
  • Lots of water - you'll work up a mighty thirst!

Go With a Friend or Two

It's much more fun to go with someone. You can encourage one another and keep each other accountable. Trina brought her sister, Renee brought her daughter and I brought my daughter-in-law.

How much will you burn?

If you're interested in calories burned during a workout you can check out this calculator. According to the calculator I burned 885 calories in about an hour.

Steps
I'm not sure how accurate it was but I wore my pedometer and it said I took over 9,000 steps during the workout. For me that's about the same number of steps as a 4 mile walk. And I know that I got a more heart pumping workout with Zumba than with my normal walking routine.
To be honest I just keep moving and don't worry too much about the steps. Just make sure you're not on video!

Will You Be Sore?

Yes. (but it goes away and you'll feel better in the long run)

Why You Should Take A Class (or why I need to take a class)

I know for a fact that if I was doing a workout at home on DVD there's no way I would have finished the whole thing. I'm basically a wimp and I don't like to sweat...For me being in a class with other people to encourage me and a teacher to give me an extra push keeps me going. I would not get the same workout on my own. That's just me:-)

What I Love About Our Class

What I really love about this class is that everyone is so nice. The teacher is super helpful, positive and full of energy. She made me want to do better without feeling bad about myself. (I admit I have trouble remembering my left foot from my right:-) And the other students are all really nice too. No show offs. Just a group of ladies who are all  out to have fun and get in shape and they're happy to welcome newcomers.

So if you've never tried Zumba I encourage you to check out a class and get moving today!

My Very Good Week - By Patti

I've had the best week I've had in a long time.

I love our weekly get together. I don't like calling us a group or that we have a weekly meeting because that seems so formal. We're just three friends getting together and helping one another.

Last week we went on a field trip of sorts. To the mall - specifically to Victoria's Secret. Lunch out and a day of shopping does wonders. It was the jump start I needed to get back on track.

At Barnes and Noble I bought two books.

Walk It Off by Readers Digest

Some really good, practical ideas to get you walking. Plus exercises and recipes.
Walk It Off: Lose Weight the Easy Way Look Great * Get Healthy * Eat Well * Embrace Life

The Wildwater Walking Club by Claire Cook

A fun read about Noreen who loses both her job and her boyfriend and finds herself floundering. She dons a pair of sneakers and a pedometer and starts walking. Along the way she meets two new friends and improves her health and her life.
The Wildwater Walking Club

Like Noreen I pulled out my pedometer and started walking this week.  Tried to get in at least 10,000 steps a day.

I tracked every bit of food I consumed and stayed within my points.

Ate my five veggies and fruits each day.

Even got in two servings of dairy - on most days.

And it paid off. I lost 2.4 pounds this week!

Yippie!

I've struggled each week to lose  .2 or .4 so I'm elated!

Since Trina posted about her purchase here I have to share my big Valentine's purchase.

I loved what she had to say on her post...

Have fun now while you're on your way
to accomplishing your goals!

I agree! Why wait?

Don't put things off until you think you achieve that perfect goal.

Have fun NOW!

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!
